Nga Puhi, Te Mahurehure
I first started making felt tiki when hapu with my first child Tuiata.
The tiki were a protective totem for me to guide me through pregnancy and homebirth.
The bright colours reflect my joy at bringing a child into te ao hurihuri nei (this changing world) and a celebration of creating a new life and whanau member.
My gratitude goes to my ancestors - my tupuna Maori who created tiki taonga in reverence of life and our abilities as people to live well and live strongly.
I am also grateful for the skills of my Pakeha ancestors as homemakers, dressmakers and embroiderers that I enjoy exploring in my work today.
