Amorangi Hikuroa
I am Amorangi Hikuroa.
I am of Nga Puhi and Maniapoto descent.
I am a Clay artist and member of Kaihanga Uku (Maori Clay Workers Crew).
The medium of clay is a very powerful alchemy, working with elements of Earth, Wind and Fire. I feel privilaged to be part of the whakapapa of Uku- an ancient whakapapa connecting us to our Pacific Tupuna.
I am influenced by the ceramic history of our ancient peoples, from the tangata whenua o Amerika, o Africa, o Asia, back to the Jomon people of Japan, 6000 years ago.
Establishing uku as an accepted Maori artform is our focus. Our Tupuna left us with the knowledge and the skills to do this.
Uku has always been in our stories. We are Clay, the body of the mother.
